Advanced Practice Provider
(Physician Sponsored/Specialty Practitioner)
An Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is defined as an Advanced Practice Nurse – APN-C, Orthopaedic Physician Assistant – OPA-C, or Physician Assistant – PA-C, who performs specific functions on behalf of their employer, supervising physician and/or physicians. Assists and functions as an extension of the supervising physician(s) practicing under written protocols. May practice independently or in conjunction with the supervising physician(s). Works to uphold OrthoTennessee’s mission, values, and standard of excellence in patient care.
Essential Functions and Key Responsibilities:
➢ Practice, assists and functions as an extension to the supervising physician(s) in providing quality care to the orthopaedic patient as a whole within the scope of practice and commensurate with their experience.
➢ Practices under written protocols, established and agreed upon by the practitioner and physician in accordance with state rules and regulations.
➢ Triages, diagnoses and initiates appropriate treatment on behalf of the supervising physician.
➢ Performs services in the clinics, as well as within the hospitals and surgical facilities at the discretion of the supervising physician(s) to include, but not limited to: hospital and surgical rounds, assisting at surgery, charting, in-house treatment and peri-operative management of the patient.
➢ Provides routine care within the clinic setting to include, but not limited to:
o History & Physical assessment
o All applicable injections, aspirations and arthrocentesis
o All applicable immobilization techniques and devices
o All applicable office procedures and surgeries
➢ Holds individual clinics, in conjunction with the physician, at the discretion of the supervising physician(s).
➢ Provides patient education and communicates with the patient regarding questions or issues surrounding their treatment and care.
➢ Conducts themselves in a professional manner that is consistent with the mission and values of OrthoTennessee to provide top quality patient care and to be the leaders in the orthopaedic industry.
Knowledge, Skills and Personal Characteristics
➢ Provides orthopedic care to the patients and works in harmony with all staff in all departments and to assist their supervising physician(s) in providing the patient a unique experience in care and treatment at OrthoTennessee.
➢ Maintains appropriate licensure/certifications. Stays current with CME hours.
➢ Knowledge of OSHA and HIPPA regulations and requirements for annual compliance.
➢ Knowledge of practice resources.
➢ Knowledge of computer systems and applications, specifically, must be proficient in the use of the EHR software.
➢ Knowledge of community resources to promote a positive image to the community.
➢ Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally, with patients, staff, and physicians.
➢ Skill in organizing and managing multiple issues and/or tasks.
➢ Ability to interact with other departments.
➢ Exhibits strong communication and interpersonal skills when interacting with patients, physicians, and co-workers.
➢ Adheres to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for safety, personal conduct, attendance, punctuality, and personal appearance.
➢ Assumes responsibility for personal development and own actions.
➢ Promotes good public relations and customer service at all times.
Education and Experience
Must be licensed and/or Certified in one or more of the following:
➢ Advanced Practice Nurse – APN-C (American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
➢ Family Nurse Practitioner Certified – FNP-C – Family Nurse Practitioner Board (FNPB)
➢ Orthopaedic Physician Assistant Certified – OPA-C – National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Physician Assistants (NBCOPA)
➢ Physician Assistant Certified – PA-C – National Certification Commission for Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
